![]() But it’s the ears and brain that will do most of the work. Smack dab in the middle of a colorful, and color-coded interior, is the heart of the MP3. With a flick of a switch, the disco ball drops and Mazda’s newest creation is released. The splitfold rear seatbacks open to a largeenough 12.9 cubic foot trunk, but rear leg room is tight in the back, especially when you load down the kids or luggage. MP3’s brushed silver highlights are all over a very sporty cabin that will sit well with the driver or any of the three or four (in a pinch) other passengers. Outside, they’ve lowered the Protege about an inch and added two spoilers, side skirts and rounded headlamps that make it seem more attacking in its stance. ![]() In the MP3 that means Tokico shocks and a tight ride that will have you bouncing to the music, even if you don’t want to. What helps out are the upgrades that come courtesy of Racing Beat in Anaheim, Calif., a company that loves to turn Honda Civics into Honda Un-civils, with aftermarket ad-ons. Not great power, but decent given the vehicle’s weight.Īnd because what’s around the engine is tuned so tight and lightweight – supportive bucket seats, a shifter with a short throw and an engine that wants to rev – the MP3 maneuvers and grips the road, eating up challenges. Handling is responsive and the 2- liter twin-cam four-cylinder gets a boost of 10 horsepower (140 total) and seven pound-feet of torque over previous models. With 17-inch wheels tied to a leatherwrapped three-spoke steering wheel, it is truly form and function melding into one. With revised steering this year, the MP3’s roadability is still topshelf, and maybe slightly above the other Protege’s we’ve driven. Fortunately, when the designers tweaked the sound system they also bolstered a few other parts. It clobbers the compact sedans and valiantly spars with the bigger boys, and for good reason: It’s fun. The Protege has always been a critic’s friend. Modified from an original auto manufacturer’s show car (called the MPS), Mazda took its traditional Protege, spruced up the exterior like a tricked-out street racer, added fatter, 17-inch wheels, a spoiler and (did we mention?) the radio. Topped out and loaded at $18,530, it might be hard to get either away from it. The sales folks at Mazda thought it would be a good idea to build a niche vehicle, something appealing to either the teen-age son in the family or the father who hadn’t yet lost his hearing, but wanted to. They’d like you to believe, in this case, a good car starts with a great set of tunes, ergo: the MP3.Īlthough you’d have reason to believe Mazda brought in a set of 16-year-olds to tweak its Protege, the MP3 idea actually came out of a meeting with straight-as-plaid sales managers. The MP3’s real charm is in its firmer springs, stiffer control-arm bushings and an upgraded engine that keeps it fun even when your only musical selection is tires on pavement. Sure, the MP3’s 280-watt Kenwood Excelon Z919 head unit is a disco ball of flashy electronics and fancy buttons all hooked to a thub, thub, thub of a subwoofer better suited for Rage Against the Machine than Ray Charles. It’s 20 teen-agers in a 5-by-9 cell with ‘N Sync. But to say it’s just a stereo is to say sled dogs generally prefer red meat.Īs one auto critic noted, the MP3 isn’t really a vehicle. Hence, the name of the car, and a sizable understanding why it’s $2,000 more than a Plain-Jane Protege ES. New for 2001, in what Mazda calls its Performance Series lineup, the Protege is a decent ride with a stadium-sized radio that can handle anything you throw its way – either Memorex or MP3 digital audio burned in your best friend’s basement. Welcome to the jungle and goodbye acute hearing. Depending on your point of view – and likely your age – about 60 ticks in the cross hairs of the MP3’s fury will give you all the ammo to know this midsize, unassuming, sporty sedan is really Axl Rose in disguise. You don’t need a week in the new Mazda Protege MP3 to draw some decent conclusions.

She wanted to explore the idea of remembering people when they are far away, and explained "the power of music to bring people back to life, literally and figuratively". Robert wrote the music, and Kristen wrote the lyrics. They wrote it as a bolero- ranchero style song, knowing that it could also work if performed as a quiet ballad. The team researched popular Mexican music, and wanted to write a song that could have been sung by Jorge Negrete or Pedro Infante. A challenge with the song was in crafting lyrics that would pivot in meaning depending on the context in which they were sung. The film developed into a musical, but not a "break-into-song" type. Director Lee Unkrich had admired them since they wrote Finding Nemo – The Musical in 2006. Production įrozen team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez were hired for the project. The piece is the "tie that binds multiple generations in the shared love of music". It finally appears in a pop version played during the end credits, sung by singers Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade. It is then used as a nostalgic song to connect an older Coco ( Ana Ofelia Murguía) to an earlier time in her life and to reunite Miguel ( Anthony Gonzalez) with his great-grandmother. It next appears as a lullaby from Héctor to his daughter Coco (which reveals that song was written for her), when he has to travel far as a traveling artist. It is known as Ernesto de la Cruz's ( Benjamin Bratt) most popular song written by his music partner Héctor Rivera ( Gael García Bernal), and is first introduced in a mariachi arrangement, as a plea from Ernesto to his fans to keep him in their minds even as he tours in other places. The song is used in a variety of contexts throughout the film. Gael García Bernal voiced Héctor in the English and Spanish versions of the movie. ![]() Here are some other flights of fancy from The Book of Saint Albans: Larks get two terms of venery in Berners' book: exalting and exaltation. The Book of Saint Albans contains a list of many terms of venery at the end of the treatise on hunting, and while many of them are so familiar as to be unremarkable-a gaggle of geese, a pride of lions-some are rather fanciful. Berners was likely brought up at court and evidently retained a taste for hawking and hunting after she took orders. It was the first book in England to be printed in more than two colors (six were used in the heraldry section), and authorship of the sections on hunting and hawking have been attributed to Dame Juliana Barnes (more often called Berners), the prioress of an abbey near St. ![]() The Book of Saint Albans, originally printed in 1486, was a collection of advice and information on hawking, hunting, and heraldry. But this particular collective noun goes back to the 15th century, and comes from one of the most famous books on collective nouns in print. Authors then posited that the crowd of crows was called a murder because of the tremendous noise they make.įans of collective nouns are familiar with an exaltation of larks, which was the title of a book by James Lipton on collective nouns. Murder of crows was one of them-but it was rediscovered in the early 20th century. Though there was a rage for terms of venery, most of them fell out of use in the 16th century. Etymologists suggest that the association of crows and ravens with death might have led to the name, but the writer of the manuscript where a murder of crows first appeared gives no hint. ![]() Crows have been grouped in murders since the late 1400s-though no reason for the name was given. Treatises on hunting and hawking were very popular, and whenever the subject appeared in the 15th century, so too did lists of venery terms. There was, at that time, something of a fad for "terms of venery," or names for groups of game animals. This use of murder goes back to the 1400s. Unlike many collective nouns, this sense of murder even has enough evidence in print to merit entry into our dictionaries. One of our best-known (and easily meme-able) collective nouns is a murder of crows. And this may be why we love the more fanciful collective nouns so much. In the end, there is no cut-and-dried rule for how to refer to a particular group of creatures. Dogs come in packs elephants in herds people in a variety of conglomerations. But not all social animals come in colonies. But that's not to say that swarm isn't applied to other creatures: a swarm of eels was once common enough to merit mention in our Unabridged Dictionary.Ĭolony tends to be used of specific populations of animals that are settled in a place-a colony of rabbits or bees, for instance. When applied to other creatures, swarm tends to be used of other insects, and particularly ones that fly-locusts, fireflies, cockroaches. Its earliest uses were for great assemblies of bees on the wing, and indeed swarm of bees is still common. Perhaps swarm is an easier collective noun to get one's hands on. Herd, a word most people associate with deer, horses, or cattle, has been used of porpoises, seals, and birds, and flock, a word we now associate with sheep and birds, has been used of elephants, lions, camels, and pigs. Historically, a herd was any group of animals traveling or eating together, as was a flock, and this jumble continued on into the modern era. But herd and flock are also used of game animals in set phrases-a herd of deer a flock of geese. In this particular use, herd tends to be used of cattle or other bovine animals, and flock tends to be used of sheep and goats. Both herd and flock are used of animals (and usually farm animals) that are domesticated and kept under the care of a person. Fish also come in shoals, which comes from an Old English word that means "multitudes." If it's a group of one type of aquatic mammal-whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals-then they tend to gather in pods.īut once we get out of the sea, the rules for what to generically call groups of creatures get more complicated. No, not that school: this particular word comes from a Middle Dutch word that refers to a group of animals together. The fish-true fish, at any rate-are the easiest to classify. But what distinguishes a herd from a flock, or a swarm from a colony? And what do you call a group of fish? ![]() Ask someone about collective nouns and they're liable to holler "a murder of crows!" or "an exaltation of larks!" While the dramatic collective nouns are the ones that get the most attention, we use a number of collective terms every day. This worked ok, but there were still a number of errors.įinally, I had to go over the code and fix absolute mounds of errors, mostly things that would have worked anyway once compiled, like unparameterized arraylists. Procyon seemed promising, but was skipping over classes, so I ended up using secureteam's gui implementation of Procyon. I tried Jad, JD-GUI, and a handful of others. I used that and produced the first semi-functioning deobfuscated version of the game. Eventually I found that apache had source code that could be used to make a custom deobfuscator. So decompiling produced a lot of ambiguity, with all sorts of errors saying "there's no field in type 'x' called 'y'" but 'y' was actually a class in package 'x' rather than a field in the class 'x'.Īnyway I then had to deobfuscate the code, but there were no suitable deobfuscators on the internet, all of them left small ambiguities all over the place or did something else that left more problems than it solved. Simply decompiling it didn't work because a lot of the type names were the same, like there were a bunch of classes named a or b in different packages, and then there was a few packages and subpackages called a, and then there were methods called a, and then there were fields called a. ![]() To learn the technique of splicing, it’s best to practice with a short piece of 1/4″ three strand manila rope. If after making the first three tucks on all three strands, you reduce each strand to one-half of its fibers and make a fourth tuck, the splice will have a nice tapered look. ![]() The rope should maintain approximately 80% of its strength if the splice is made with a series of three tucks on each of the three strands. Also, you should try to pull each set of tucks tight and with even tension. Try to prevent each strand from raveling while you’re working with it. ![]() Those first few tucks that you make might look a bit rough, but try to remember that neatness is one of the keys to a well-made splice. The first tuck sets up the pattern for the following tucks and gives the splice a symmetrical appearance. Learning how to make the first tuck on each of the three strands is the key to splicing. The eye splice, back splice and short splice are basic and well suited to the type of pioneering outlined (in this pamphlet.) The splices shown here can be made in any three strand rope (manila, sisal, poly, or nylon). There are a number of rather complicated splices. Splices in ropes make the rope secure and ready to go when needed. Splices are neater and smaller and not likely to come untied in use. In some cases the right knot could do the same job as each of these three splices: a bowline might be used instead of an eye splice a Sheet Bend, Water Knot or Carrick Bend instead of a short splice, and whipping could replace the back splice. The basic process in all three splices is to unlay the strands at the end of the rope, then weave them over and under back into the rope to form the splice. There are three basic types of splices that are typically made on three-strand twisted rope: an eye splice, a back splice, and a short splice. Making splices is not really all that hard to do. Very often, the ability to do a neat job of splicing is placed on the top of the skills list of ropework. Making the proper splices in the proper places on your ropes is the benchmark of a skilled craftsman.
